FAQ
Common questions
Everything new users tend to ask. If something here is missing, email me and I'll add it.
Are the tutors real people?+
No. Every tutor on Tospeak is an AI: a real-time video avatar with a personality and a voice, powered by an AI model. They look human and react to you in real time, but they are software.
Do I need to register to use it?+
No. You can start a lesson without an account. We do not ask for your name, email, or anything else.
Is it free?+
Every new account gets one 5-minute trial lesson, free, no card required. Sign-in is by email magic-link (no password). After the trial, a paid plan keeps the conversations going — plans start from $0.67/day (Daily, 60 min/day) or $1.67/day (Unlimited). Both also unlock lesson history, saved vocabulary, favourite tutors, and tutors who remember you across sessions.
What languages can I speak in?+
Any of 70+ languages — Russian, Spanish, Hebrew, Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Ukrainian, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Turkish, Polish, and many more. Speech recognition uses Google's Gemini Live, which auto-detects the language you're speaking — no setting to flip. Your tutor understands what you said and answers in English (or briefly in your language if you ask). The goal is for you to gradually shift toward speaking English yourself.
What ages is Tospeak suitable for?+
All ages, from kids around 7 to retirees. We have tutors with different teaching styles for kids, teens, students, and adults. Younger children should use it with a parent.
Do tutors remember me from previous lessons?+
If you are signed in and you fill in the "About you" card on your profile (name, level, goals, interests, native language), every tutor will know who they are talking to from the start of every lesson. They will also see a short list of your last few lessons (topic, tutor, when, how long) and the words you have saved, so they can build on what you already practised. Anonymous lessons stay completely fresh — no memory at all. You can opt out at any time from your profile, even while signed in.
Can other tutors see what I did with a different tutor?+
They see the topic, tutor name, date, duration of your past lessons, and the words you saved — they do not read each other's full transcripts. No other student's data is ever in the prompt; each learner only ever has their own profile and history attached.
Will the AI sometimes be wrong?+
Yes, occasionally. AI tutors are excellent for speaking practice — the part of language learning that humans need most — but they are not infallible. Treat them as practice partners, not authorities. Do not rely on them for medical, legal, or other professional advice.
What about my privacy?+
Your camera and microphone never leave your device. We do not record lessons. We do not use cookies or trackers. Read the full details in our privacy policy.
Why does my browser ask for camera and microphone access?+
The microphone is needed for the tutor to hear you. The camera is optional — it lets the tutor see your facial expressions and react to them, which makes lessons feel more natural. You can decline the camera and the lesson will still work.
Why is the lesson green-screen / why is there no sound?+
Both are usually due to your browser blocking autoplay or routing audio to a Bluetooth device. Try a hard refresh (Ctrl+Shift+R), disconnect any Bluetooth headphones, and look for the "Tap here" button on the lesson page.
Should I use headphones?+
On a phone or laptop with built-in mics, yes — wired headphones (with mic) give the cleanest input and the tutor will understand you better. Bluetooth headsets work too but sometimes route audio in ways that confuse the browser; if you hit issues, switch to wired or use the device speakers.
How much do paid plans cost? What do they unlock?+
Daily is $0.67/day (billed $20/month): 60 minutes of talking per day, lesson history, saved vocabulary, favourite tutors, and tutors who remember you. Unlimited is $1.67/day (billed $50/month): no daily cap and priority support. Cancel anytime from your profile; you keep access until the end of the billing period.
Does it work on a phone?+
Yes — Android Chrome and iPhone Safari both work fully. Speech recognition is handled by Google's Gemini Live API (streamed via WebSocket from your browser), so we don't depend on the browser's built-in speech support. That also means we auto-detect the language you speak in — Hebrew, Arabic, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish and dozens more all work out of the box.
Do I need a fast internet connection?+
A normal home or mobile connection (4 Mbps+) is enough. The avatar streams as low-bitrate WebRTC video.
Can I switch tutors mid-lesson?+
Yes. There is a "Change tutor" button on the lesson page. You can also browse all tutors at /tutors at any time.
Who is behind Tospeak?+
Tospeak is an independent project run by one person. Read more on the about page or write to support@tospeak.ai.
