FAQ
Common questions
Everything new users tend to ask. If something here is missing, email me and I’ll add it.
Are the tutors real people?+
No. Every tutor on Tospeak is an AI: a real-time video avatar with a personality and a voice, powered by an AI model. They look human and react to you in real time, but they are software.
Do I need to register to use it?+
No. You can start a lesson without an account. We do not ask for your name, email, or anything else.
Is it free?+
Yes, while the product is in early access. We may introduce paid plans later, but the experience you have today is free.
What languages can I speak in?+
You can speak in any of 25+ languages — Russian, Spanish, Hebrew, Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Ukrainian, and many more. Your tutor understands what you said and answers in English (or briefly in your language if you ask). The goal is for you to gradually shift toward speaking English yourself.
What ages is Tospeak suitable for?+
All ages, from kids around 7 to retirees. We have tutors with different teaching styles for kids, teens, students, and adults. Younger children should use it with a parent.
Will the AI sometimes be wrong?+
Yes, occasionally. AI tutors are excellent for speaking practice — the part of language learning that humans need most — but they are not infallible. Treat them as practice partners, not authorities. Do not rely on them for medical, legal, or other professional advice.
What about my privacy?+
Your camera and microphone never leave your device. We do not record lessons. We do not use cookies or trackers. Read the full details in our privacy policy.
Why does my browser ask for camera and microphone access?+
The microphone is needed for the tutor to hear you. The camera is optional — it lets the tutor see your facial expressions and react to them, which makes lessons feel more natural. You can decline the camera and the lesson will still work.
Why is the lesson green-screen / why is there no sound?+
Both are usually due to your browser blocking autoplay or routing audio to a Bluetooth device. Try a hard refresh (Ctrl+Shift+R), disconnect any Bluetooth headphones, and look for the "🔊 Tap here" button on the lesson page.
Does it work on a phone?+
Yes, on Android Chrome. iOS Safari does not support the speech recognition API our tutors rely on, so the iPhone experience is currently limited.
Do I need a fast internet connection?+
A normal home or mobile connection (4 Mbps+) is enough. The avatar streams as low-bitrate WebRTC video.
Can I switch tutors mid-lesson?+
Yes. There is a "Change tutor" button on the lesson page. You can also browse all tutors at /tutors at any time.
Who is behind Tospeak?+
Tospeak is an independent project run by one person. Read more on the about page or write to support@tospeak.ai.
